Overview
ISO 22172-2:2021 defines standardized access to vehicle on-board diagnostics (OBD) for agricultural vehicles as part of the ISO 22172 RMI (repair and maintenance information) series. It specifies minimum hardware and software requirements for diagnostic access, including provisions for reprogramming, calibration and configuration after repair, and provides hardware/software specifications for diagnostic tools. Note: the standard does not apply to retrofit kits.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Diagnostic connectors and power
- Requires standard diagnostic connectors (ISOBUS / ISO 11783-2, OBD II / ISO 15031-3, SAE J1939-13) and 12–24 V battery power on the diagnostic interface.
- Addresses inaccessible subnets and separate engine-bus connectors where needed.
- Vehicle software and communication protocols
- Mandates use of recognized communication and diagnostic protocols such as ISO 11783 (ISOBUS), CAN (ISO 11898), SAE J1939, UDS (ISO 14229), KWP, DoCAN, DoIP (ISO 13400).
- Specifies support for vehicle identification (VIN/PIN) and standardized communication methods for diagnostic data exchange.
- Reprogramming, calibration and configuration
- Defines requirements for ECU flashing (reprogramming), calibration routines and configuration management to restore or maintain vehicle functionality after repairs.
- Diagnostic tool specifications
- Covers hardware and software requirements for generic diagnostic tools and Vehicle Communication Interfaces (VCIs), including standard APIs such as TMC RP1210, SAE J2534 and ISO 22900-2.
- Addresses VCI interfaces, PC/web-application requirements and coexistence of manufacturer-specific and generic diagnostic software.
- Scope limitations
- Focuses on factory-integrated systems; retrofit kits are explicitly excluded.
Practical applications and who uses this standard
ISO 22172-2 is practical for:
- Vehicle manufacturers (VMs) - to design diagnostic access and meet RMI requirements.
- Authorized repairers and independent workshops - to access OBD data, perform diagnostics, and carry out reprogramming, calibration and configuration.
- Diagnostic tool & VCI vendors - to develop compliant hardware and software (PC clients, web apps, APIs).
- Fleet operators and service organizations - for standardized maintenance procedures and interoperable diagnostic access.
- Regulators and procurement teams - to specify interoperable diagnostic access in tenders or compliance documents.
