Overview
ISO 23324:2020 specifies a laboratory method to determine the antistatic performance (static electricity elimination) of fabric conditioners and antistatic agents. The standard defines a repeatable procedure to treat test fabrics with conditioner solution, measure fabric surface resistance, and express antistatic effectiveness as the decrease in surface resistance coefficient (Δρ) or the decrease in the logarithm of that coefficient (Δlgρ). This provides objective, comparable data for product development, quality control and regulatory reporting.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Method applicable to fabric conditioners and antistatic agents; differences to other textile electrostatic standards are noted in Annex B.
- Test material: Polyester woven twill (specified thread counts) is recommended; alternate fabrics may be used but only for comparative results.
- Apparatus:
- Digital ultra‑high resistance meter with coaxial electrodes and defined electrode geometry; electrode pressure specified.
- Oven (45 ± 2) °C, humidistat (target RH ≈ 43 %), and a vegetable dehydrator (for standardized washing/spinning).
- Preparation & treatment:
- Standardized washing (soap solution ~1 g/L sodium soap, 40–45 °C), controlled spinning/rinsing and drying procedures.
- Conditioner test concentration: 10 g/L (prepare and test in parallel replicates).
- Soak treated specimens 10 min, then dry under specified conditions before testing.
- Measurement conditions: Controlled environment, typically (43 ± 5) % RH and (20 ± 2) °C.
- Calculations & reporting:
- Convert measured fabric surface resistance (R) to the surface resistance coefficient (ρs) using electrode geometry.
- Express antistatic performance as Δρ (difference between blank and treated averages) or Δlgρ (difference of logarithms); larger values indicate better antistatic effect.
- Test report shall include instrument details, sample ID, polyester spec, solution concentration, environmental conditions, Δρ/Δlgρ, operator and any deviations.
Applications and users
- Manufacturers and formulators of fabric conditioners and antistatic agents for product development and comparative performance testing.
- Textile and consumer‑product testing laboratories performing quality control and batch validation.
- R&D teams optimizing surfactant blends for static suppression and fabric hand.
- Regulatory or procurement teams seeking objective, standardized antistatic data for specifications.
Related standards
- ISO 23324:2020 references terminology resources (ISO Online Browsing Platform, IEC Electropedia) and notes differences to other international standards on textile electrostatics (see Annex B). Laboratories should consider harmonizing results with other textile electrostatic test methods when cross‑referencing performance data.
