ISO 23940:2021 - Dentistry - Excavators defines standardized dimensions and performance requirements for handheld dental excavators. This ISO standard provides manufacturers, quality managers and regulatory teams with clear specifications for excavator forms, material selection, mechanical strength, surface quality and labelling to ensure safety, interchangeability and reprocessing suitability of dental excavators.

- Scope and classification
- Covers excavator shapes and forms (Forms A–E), including straight, angled, contra‑angled and spoon (types 501–506) working ends.
- Design and dimensions
- Detailed drawings and dimension tables specify blade width, thickness, length, neck thickness, blade/shank height and angles. Measurement points and tolerances are defined (typical dimensional tolerance ±0.1 mm, angles ±5°).
- Maximum overall length is at the manufacturer’s discretion; note that lengths over 173 mm may cause handling/sterilization cassette issues.
- Materials and hardness
- Working‑end materials shall comply with ISO 21850‑1 (stainless steel materials for dental instruments).

- Surfaces must be free from production residues and visible defects; handle finishes should be cleanable and uniform.
- Resistance to reprocessing
- Instruments must withstand 100 reprocessing cycles (or manufacturer‑stated maximum if less) following ISO 17664 cleaning/disinfection/sterilization instructions, with no deterioration or corrosion.

- Permanent marking requirements: manufacturer name, item/reference number, lot/batch and UDI‑code (exception for handles
