Overview
ISO 2924:1973 specifies the interchangeability dimensions of the drive for solid and segmental circular saws for cold cutting of metals. Published as the first edition in 1973, it covers saws with outside diameters in the range 224 mm to 2 240 mm and gives metric drive interface dimensions (arbors, internal bores, driving pin sizes and positional tolerances) to ensure mechanical compatibility between saw blades and machine spindles.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to all types of metal-cutting circular saws - solid high-speed-steel blades and saws with detachable segments - used for cold cutting of metals.
- Diameter range: External (outside) diameters D from 224 mm to 2 240 mm are grouped using preferred-number series to standardize sizes.
- Internal diameters (d): Based on ISO/R 240 ranges, with an additional internal diameter (120 mm) included in the series.
- Drive features: Defines interchangeability dimensions such as internal bore sizes, locations and sizes of driving pins, and corresponding machine-side features.
- Tolerances:
- Standard tolerances for fits are given (e.g., H8 for certain bores).
- For higher-speed applications a tighter tolerance of H7 is recommended.
- Positional tolerance t specifies that the centre of the hole for pin diameter d2 must lie within a circle of diameter t (per ISO/R 1101).
- Units: All dimensions are in millimetres.
- Standardization approach: Uses ISO preferred-number series (R10 and R20) and aligns with ISO/R 523 recommended outside diameters.
Applications
- Ensures interchangeability of circular saw blades across different machine makes and models.
- Guides design of arbors, mandrels and drive pins for manufacturers of saw blades and sawing machines.
- Used by procurement and maintenance teams to standardize spares and reduce downtime by ensuring compatible replacement blades.
- Supports quality and compliance checks in production and workshop environments where metal-cutting circular saws are specified.
Who should use this standard
- Circular saw blade manufacturers and tooling designers
- Machine tool builders (sawing machines, arbors, mandrels)
- Maintenance engineers, workshop managers, and procurement specialists
- Standards engineers and technical buyers specifying blade-to-machine interfaces
