Overview
ISO 29468:2022 specifies the equipment and procedures for determining the deviation from flatness of full‑size thermal insulating products for building applications. The standard defines how to place specimens, the measuring apparatus and loads, conditioning and test conditions, calculation of results and required test report content. This second edition (2022) replaces ISO 29468:2008 and was prepared by ISO/TC 163 in cooperation with CEN/TC 88.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Applies to full‑size thermal insulating products used in building applications.
- Principle: Measure the maximum distance between the product (convex side uppermost) and a flat surface.
- Apparatus:
- Flat surface (reference plane).
- Metal rule or tape graduated in millimetres with readings to 0.5 mm.
- Rigid frame with a movable measuring device: disc diameter 30 mm mounted to a graduated pin or dial gauge (graduation ≥ 0.5 mm) applying a load of (2.0 ± 0.1) N.
- Test specimens: Use the full‑size product. Number of specimens is as specified in the relevant product standard or agreed between parties.
- Conditioning:
- Normal: store at least 6 h at (23 ± 5) °C.
- In disputes: (23 ± 2) °C, (50 ± 5)% RH.
- Tropical option: (27 ± 2) °C, (65 ± 5)% RH (must be reported).
- Procedure:
- Lay specimen convex face up.
- If deviation is only in one direction, report the maximum distance (to 0.5 mm).
- For warped products, measure maximum and minimum distances Ymax and Ymin and calculate deviation S = Ymax − Ymin.
- Reporting: Test report shall reference ISO 29468:2022 and include product identification, pre‑test history, conditioning, test conditions, all individual measurement values and the maximum deviation and its location.
- Accuracy: The current edition does not include a formal statement of method accuracy; this is intended for a future revision.
Applications and users
ISO 29468:2022 is used for:
- Quality control and factory testing of thermal insulation panels and boards.
- Type testing and product verification against contractual or product‑standard requirements.
- Laboratories, manufacturers, product certifiers, specifiers, architects and procurement teams who need consistent, documented flatness measurement for building insulation products.
Keywords: ISO 29468:2022, thermal insulating products, flatness determination, deviation from flatness, insulation flatness test, building applications, test procedure, conditioning, dial gauge.
