Overview
ISO 3451-1:2019 - Plastics - Determination of ash - Part 1: General methods defines standardized laboratory procedures for measuring the ash content of plastics. The standard describes four principal approaches (direct calcination, two variants of sulfation, and an automated instrument method) and sets out test conditions, apparatus, sample sizing guidance and reporting requirements to obtain reproducible ash results across a range of polymer types.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Methods A–D:
- Method A (Direct calcination) - burning/char and calcination in a muffle furnace (includes a “rapid ashing” option if demonstrated equivalent).
- Method B (Sulfation after burning) - convert inorganic residue to sulfates with concentrated H2SO4 after burning (produces “sulfated ash”).
- Method C (Sulfation before burning) - mix with H2SO4 and heat so fuming/burning occurs; used when volatile metal halides might be lost during burning (not applicable to silicones or fluorine-containing polymers).
- Method D (Automated instrument) - fully automatic instruments integrating drying, ashing, weighing and continuous mass/temperature recording.
- Final calcination temperatures - select one of the specified ranges for the final step, unless otherwise required: (600 ± 25) °C, (750 ± 50) °C, (850 ± 50) °C or (950 ± 50) °C. The ash mass can vary with calcination temperature (e.g., carbonate decomposition).
- Test portion sizing - guidance provided to choose sample mass to yield approximately 5–500 mg of ash; a preliminary test is recommended if ash content is unknown.
- Accuracy & repeatability - calcination is repeated until two consecutive weighings differ by ≤ 0.5 mg (constant mass). Analytical balance accuracy of 0.1 mg is specified.
- Apparatus & safety - crucibles (silica, porcelain, quartz, etc.), muffle furnace, gas burner, fume hood, and appropriate handling of concentrated sulfuric acid (98%) with warnings and ventilation requirements.
- Laboratory controls - periodic furnace calibration traceable to national standards and ventilation efficiency checks are required for consistent results.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 3451-1:2019 is used by:
- Polymer and plastics testing laboratories for routine ash quantification.
- Quality control teams in plastics manufacturing to monitor filler, mineral content or residue levels.
- Materials engineers and R&D for formulation development and comparison of additives, fillers and flame retardants.
- Regulatory and certification bodies requiring standardized compositional data.
- Recycling and waste characterization to assess inorganic content that affects processing.
Practical uses include verifying filler loading, confirming removal of organic components, evaluating flame‑retardant or mineral additive levels, and ensuring product specifications reference a defined ash-test method.
Related standards
- ISO 3451-2, ISO 3451-3, ISO 3451-4 and ISO 3451-5 - specify particular conditions for specific polymer families (e.g., poly(alkylene terephthalate), cellulose acetate, polyamides, PVC and certain filled or flame-retarded materials).
