Overview
ISO 3834-5:2021 is part of the ISO 3834 series on quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials. This Part 5 does not set new quality levels itself; instead it specifies the International Standards (including clauses and subclauses) that a manufacturer or certification body can adopt to claim conformity with the quality requirements of ISO 3834-2, ISO 3834-3 or ISO 3834-4. The third edition (2021) updates the referenced process list (e.g., adds laser‑arc hybrid welding) and clarifies documentation and certification practice. NOTE: brazing is covered separately (ISO 22688).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope of conformity: Identifies which ISO documents (and which clauses/subclauses) are acceptable as supporting standards to demonstrate compliance with ISO 3834‑2/3/4.
- Options to claim conformity:
- Adoption of the ISO documents listed in the standard’s tables.
- Use of technically equivalent documents.
- Use of different supporting standards required by application standards.
- Type A and Type B documents:
- Type A: Processes with quality requirements given across several documents (Tables 1–9).
- Type B: Processes with a single supporting document (Table 10).
- Certificate requirement: Certification bodies or manufacturers claiming compliance must list the supporting standards or documentation on the certificate.
- Tables of referenced topics (mapped to ISO clauses/subclauses):
- Welders and welding operators (qualification standards)
- Welding coordination personnel (roles and responsibilities)
- Non‑destructive testing (NDT) personnel and methods
- Welding procedure specifications and procedure qualification standards
- Post‑weld heat treatment requirements
- Inspection and testing during and after welding
- Calibration, verification and validation of welding and testing equipment
- Other fusion processes (e.g., stud welding, aluminothermic welding)
Applications and users
- Manufacturers of welded metal products who need to demonstrate conformity to ISO 3834 quality levels.
- Certification bodies issuing ISO 3834 conformity certificates (must list supporting standards).
- Welding coordinators, QA/QC managers, welding engineers, procurement teams and NDT personnel who select or reference appropriate procedure and personnel standards.
- Sectors: fabrication, pressure equipment, shipbuilding, aerospace, rail, energy and heavy engineering where documented welding quality and traceability are required.
