ISO 3853:1994 specifies a simplified mechanical strength testing procedure for towing vehicle coupling devices used to tow caravans or light trailers (vehicle categories O1 and O2). This second edition (1994) cancels and replaces the 1977 edition and defines dynamic test methods, strength criteria and marking requirements for coupling devices such as ball couplings, towing brackets and detachable ball supports.

- Welding: Welding procedures and qualifications for welded towing devices should follow recognized practice.
