Overview
ISO 3861:2021 - "Rubber hoses and hose assemblies for sand and grit blasting - Specification" defines minimum design, material, dimensional, physical and test requirements for rubber hoses and hose assemblies used in wet and dry sand/grit blasting. It applies to hoses rated for a maximum working pressure of 0.63 MPa (6.3 bar) and an operating temperature range of −25 °C to +70 °C. The standard covers construction, marking, type and routine testing, and production acceptance guidance.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and classification
- Hoses for abrasive blasting (wet/dry) up to 0.63 MPa and −25 °C to +70 °C.
- Electrical grades: electrically bonded (M) and electrically conductive (Ω).
- Materials & construction
- Typical construction: rubber lining, textile reinforcement, rubber cover.
- Optional conductive rubber layer or bonding wire for electrical grades.
- Lining and cover must be uniform and free from holes or porosity.
- Dimensions & tolerances
- Standard inside diameters: 12.5, 16, 19, 25, 31.5, 38, 45, 50 mm with specified tolerances.
- Concentricity: maximum 1.0 mm (total indicator reading).
- Minimum thickness: lining 5.0 mm; cover 1.0 mm.
- Physical properties
- Compound tensile strength and elongation minimums for lining and cover (lining higher than cover).
- Abrasion resistance limits specified (test per ISO 4649).
- Finished-hose requirements: proof pressure 1.25 MPa, minimum burst pressure 2.5 MPa, adhesion minimums, ozone resistance, flexibility and low-temperature performance.
- Electrical resistance limits for M and Ω grades are specified in conformance with ISO 8031.
- Testing & frequency
- Type tests (initial and every 5 years or after material/process changes) and routine/per-length tests are defined (see Annex A and B).
- Tests include visual, dimensional, proof/burst pressure, adhesion, ozone, flexibility and others.
- Marking
- Hoses: manufacturer ID, reference to ISO 3861, grade (M or Ω), inside diameter, max working pressure, and manufacture quarter/year - marked at least every 760 mm.
- Assemblies: manufacturer, max working pressure and assembly date.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 3861:2021 is intended for:
- Manufacturers of abrasive blasting hoses and hose assemblies
- Hose assemblers and fitting suppliers
- Procurement/specification engineers for construction, shipbuilding, automotive restoration, foundries and surface-preparation contractors
- Quality, safety and maintenance teams and testing laboratories verifying hose conformity and safe in-service use
Use this standard to ensure safe, durable abrasive-blasting hose systems that meet uniform dimensional, mechanical and electrical performance criteria.
