Overview
ISO 3998:1977 specifies an internationally recognized method for determining the resistance of textiles containing animal fibres to damage caused by certain insect pests. This standard is essential for manufacturers, textile researchers, and quality control professionals engaged in assuring the durability and quality of animal fibre textiles, including wool, fur, carpets, and yarns. By evaluating how textiles withstand larval insect attacks over a controlled 14-day period, the standard provides objective and visual criteria to assess fabric resistance to pests such as beetle and moth larvae.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
Applicable to all textiles with any proportion of animal fibres, ISO 3998 focuses on evaluating the damage caused by larvae of specific insect species, including Attagenus piceus, Anthrenus flavipes, Tineola bisselliella, and Tinea pellionella.
-
Test Principle
Test and control specimens are precisely conditioned, weighed, and exposed to larvae for 14 days under controlled temperature (24–27°C) and relative humidity (65 ± 2%) conditions. The resistance is assessed by measuring loss of specimen mass and examining visual damage to fibres and fabric structure.
-
Specimen Preparation and Testing
Specimens include test fabrics and voracity controls selected to confirm larval activity. The method requires careful conditioning, handling in ventilated containers, and precise weighing with an accuracy of 0.1 mg to detect mass loss attributable to insect feeding.
-
Assessment Criteria
Resistance assessment combines quantitative data (mass loss) with qualitative visual evaluation of fabric damage and larval condition. Damage levels range from no visible damage to severe hole formation, providing a nuanced understanding of textile durability against pest attack.
-
Larvae Breeding and Maintenance
The annex details standardized rearing media and breeding procedures for test insects to ensure consistent larval supply matching test specifications, enhancing reproducibility and reliability of results.
Applications
-
Textile Quality Control
Textile manufacturers use ISO 3998 to verify the pest resistance of woollen fabrics, carpets, and other animal fibre textiles, helping prevent quality degradation during storage or use.
-
Research and Development
R&D teams apply the test method to develop pest-resistant textiles by evaluating the effectiveness of treatments and coatings designed to minimize insect damage.
-
Certification and Compliance
Certification bodies can rely on this standard to issue pest resistance certifications for textiles, supporting market acceptance and regulatory compliance worldwide.
-
Storage and Preservation
Museums and textile conservators utilize insights from this standard to assess and select textile materials less vulnerable to pest damage, ensuring long-term preservation.
