Overview
ISO 4023:2009 - "Rubber hoses and hose assemblies for steam - Test methods" defines standardized laboratory procedures for exposing rubber hoses and hose assemblies to saturated steam to simulate service conditions. The standard specifies four distinct test methods to assess steam endurance and failure modes:
- Method A: Vertical rack method
- Method B: Horizontal rack method
- Method C: Flexing test, vertical arrangement
- Method D: Flexing test, horizontal arrangement
ISO 4023 is intended to produce repeatable, comparable results for product development, quality control and conformity assessment of steam-rated rubber hoses and hose assemblies.
Key topics and requirements
- Test configurations: Fixed vertical or horizontal mounting and dynamic flexing arrangements for simulating real-world service stresses.
- Apparatus essentials: Steam manifolds, pressure-regulating valve, recording and indicating gauges, steam traps and suitable end fittings/couplings. Enclosures (if used) must not raise ambient temperature near the hose by more than 11 °C above room temperature.
- Test pieces: Hoses or hose assemblies must be fitted with the specified/recommended end fittings; minimum sample length 500 mm (to allow post-test handling).
- Method B specifics: Hose is mounted with a 100–400 mm sag; typical cycle is 20 h steam then exhaust within 1 min and cool 4 h, repeated as specified in the applicable product standard.
- Post-test conditioning: After exposure, pressure is released, samples are cooled and held at atmospheric conditions for not less than 16 h and not more than 100 h before visual/physical assessment.
- End-fitting leakage: Initial tightening to stop slight leakage is normally allowed; subsequent tightening to stop further leakage is not permitted-such leakage is treated as test failure.
- Test reporting: Reports must include full hose/assembly description (including end fittings), method reference (ISO 4023:2009, method A–D), reference to the product specification (e.g., ISO 6134), visual assessment, physical test results, time to failure (if applicable), and any special observations.
Applications and users
ISO 4023 test methods are used by:
- Hose manufacturers and compound formulators for product development and type-testing.
- Independent test laboratories performing steam-resistance verification and failure analysis.
- Specifiers, procurement and quality assurance teams verifying that hoses and hose assemblies meet steam-service requirements.
- Maintenance and reliability engineers evaluating hose service life and replacement criteria.
