Overview
ISO 4211-5:2021 specifies a standardized laboratory method for assessing the abrasion resistance of furniture surface finishes. It applies to surfaces finished with foils, laminates, melamine-faced boards, pigmented lacquers and transparent lacquers on wood or lignocellulosic substrates. The test simulates wear by rotating a specimen under loaded abrasive wheels and records the number of revolutions to reach a defined Initial Wear Point (IP). Tests can be performed on an unused area of finished furniture or on matching test panels.

- Calibrate abrasive paper by abrading a zinc plate for 2 × 500 revolutions; accepted mass loss ~110 ± 20 mg.
- Calculate a correction factor (CF) from mean mass loss: CF = avg / 110 and report CF.
- Replace abrasive paper after every 200 revolutions.
- Assessment:
- Visual determination of IP by experienced observer(s); in disputes, use three observers.
- Inspection frequency varies with expected IP (every 10–50 cycles per clause).
