Overview
ISO 4570:2002 - Tyre valve threads is an International Standard that specifies limit dimensions and tolerances for common tyre valve thread series. It consolidates and revises earlier partized standards (ISO 4570-1, -2, -3) and was prepared by ISO/TC 31 (Tyres, rims and valves), Subcommittee SC 9. The standard defines thread profiles, designation rules and dimensional limits for a range of valve thread series used on tube and tubeless tyres.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and designation
- Covers three series of tyre valve threads including: 5V1, 5V2, 6V1, 8V1; 9V1, 10V2, 12V1, 13V1; and a larger group (8V2, 10V1, 11V1, 13V2, 15V1, 16V1, 17V1/2/3, 19V1, 20V1).
- Thread designations and nominal dimensions are given in a table (Table 1).
- Profile geometry
- Defines thread profile elements: pitch (P), major, pitch and minor diameters for both nut (internal thread) and screw (external/valve stem), with a figure and explanatory key.
- Limit dimensions and tolerances
- Provides numeric limit dimensions for screws (Table 2) and nuts (Table 3) - including maximum/minimum values and tolerances for major, pitch and minor diameters.
- Notes specific exceptions where alternate dimensions may apply (see ISO 9413 references).
- Thread gauging
- Gauging principles are to follow ISO 1502 (general-purpose metric screw threads - gauges and gauging).
- Normative references
- Cross-references ISO 1502 and ISO 9413 for gauging and valve dimension designation details.
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers of tyre valves and valve components use ISO 4570 to ensure interchangeability and consistent fit between valve stems and valve bodies (nut/tap).
- Rim and wheel makers, tyre service equipment producers, and vehicle OEMs apply the standard when specifying valve fittings.
- Quality engineers and metrology teams use the limit dimensions and tolerances for inspection, acceptance testing and sampling plans.
- Aftermarket parts suppliers and maintenance workshops rely on the designations and thread gauges to match replacement valves and caps.

ISO 4570:2002 is essential when specifying tyre valve threads, ensuring compatibility, safety and serviceability across tyres, wheels and valve manufacturing and maintenance.
