Overview
ISO 4769:2022 - "Hardware for furniture - Strength and durability of hinges and their components - Hinges pivoting on a vertical axis" defines standardized test methods and parameters to evaluate the strength and durability of all types of hinges that pivot on a vertical axis. The standard is intended to give comparable performance data for hinges and their components across all fields of application. Except for corrosion testing (Clause 6.4), ageing, heat and humidity effects are not included.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and intent: Tests apply to hinges and attachment parts (mounting plates, screws) and are valid only for the specific hinge model tested; production models can use results if the tested sample is representative.
- Test environment and conditioning: Indoor ambient testing at 15 °C to 27 °C. Hygroscopic plastics (e.g., polyamide) conditioned at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % RH for 7 days before testing.
- Test types:
- Overload tests (vertical and horizontal static overload)
- Functional tests including operating forces, static load tests, slam shut, reference point for sagging, durability cycles, deflection (sagging) measurement, and repeat static loads
- Corrosion resistance (separate test sequence)
- Test setup:
- Use of a test frame that deforms ≤ 1 mm under load; hinges for wooden doors mounted on specified particle board.
- Particle board requirements: face withdrawal of screws ~1100 ± 100 N (EN 320) and density ~0.65 ± 0.05 g/cm³ (ISO 9427).
- Measurement and tolerances: Forces, velocities, masses, dimensions and angles have specified tolerances (e.g., ±5 % for forces and velocities; relation 10 N = 1 kg for mass substitution).
- Sequence and reporting: Tests must follow the clause sequence unless deviations are recorded; detailed inspection criteria and a required test report format are specified.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 4769:2022 is directly applicable for:
- Furniture manufacturers and designers validating hinge performance for cabinet and door hardware
- Hardware suppliers and product developers for product development and quality assurance
- Independent test laboratories performing standardized strength, durability and corrosion testing
- Compliance officers and procurement teams specifying hinge performance requirements
Practical uses include product specification, comparative benchmarking, design validation, and conformity documentation for furniture hardware.
