Overview
ISO 4781:2022 - Building and civil engineering sealants - Determination of application life - specifies a standardized laboratory method to determine the application life (pot life / working time) of multi-component sealants used in building and civil engineering. The test measures how long a mixed multi-part sealant remains extrudable under defined conditions before its extrudability falls below a predetermined limit (typically set by the supplier).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applicable only to multi-component (multi-part) sealants; not for single-component systems.
- Test principle: Repeated extrusion from a standardized pneumatic device; the application life is the time after mixing when the mass extruded in a 30 s interval becomes lower than a specified limit.
- Apparatus: Uses the ISO 8394-2 standardized extrusion apparatus (cylinder volumes 250 ml or 400 ml; orifice diameter 2–10 mm).
- Environmental/control conditions: Test normally at (23 ± 2) °C in a temperature‑controlled chamber. Test temperature and other parameters may be agreed between parties.
- Operating parameters: Air regulator pressure typically (300 ± 10) kPa (service pressure up to 700 kPa available); extrusion duration 30 s per measurement; timing resolution 0.1 s; weighing accuracy 0.1 g up to 1 000 g.
- Conditioning and sampling: Components stored in original containers; minimum conditioning of 16 h at test temperature; prepare multiple cylinders (minimum number referenced) to obtain time‑series data.
- Test sequence: Initial screening at 30 min intervals (up to 180 min). Once an indicative value is found, perform finer measurements at 5 min intervals near the end of application life.
- Results and reporting: Plot extruded mass vs. time; report application life in minutes, test temperature/pressure, batch reference, mix ratios and mass, and any deviations from ISO 4781.
Applications and users
- Sealant manufacturers: Product development, quality control, and specification of pot life/working time for multi‑component products.
- Independent testing laboratories: To provide certified application life data for suppliers and clients.
- Specifiers and contractors: For selecting products with adequate working time for site conditions and scheduling application tasks.
- R&D and formulation engineers: To optimize cure kinetics and processing windows.
