Overview
ISO 4884:2019 - Hardmetals: Sampling and testing of powders using sintered test pieces - defines standardized procedures for sampling powder mixtures used to manufacture hardmetals, preparing representative sintered test pieces, and carrying out physical and metallurgical tests on those pieces. The standard ensures reproducible lot-based characterization for quality control, process validation and material specification in powder metallurgy and hardmetal production.

- Sampling: Sampling from a lot is carried out in accordance with ISO 3954. When blending is the final operation, samples may (by agreement) be taken from the blender.
- Preparation of test pieces: Test pieces must be produced from the test sample in conformity with the intended grade and dimensions, sintered simultaneously under identical conditions in the same furnace to ensure representativity. The standard requires that manufacturing conditions used for test pieces are appropriate for the grade. For porosity determination, one or more test pieces shall be sectioned to enable a total area of not less than 1 cm to be examined (as stated in the document).
- Testing and test order: Tests on sintered test pieces are carried out according to the international standards listed in Table 1. Notably, hardness, microstructure and porosity determinations shall not be carried out before the determination of transverse rupture strength. Chemical analysis may be performed either on powder or on a sintered test piece.
- Device‑specific tests: Magnetic characteristic analysis (coercivity, magnetic saturation) is common but device-specific; ISO 3326 was withdrawn and such analyses are outside the prescriptive scope of ISO 4884.
