Overview
ISO 5609-2:2012 specifies the characteristics of tool holders for internal turning with cylindrical shank - Part 2: Style F. Style F tool holders have a reduced (necked) shank and a cutting-edge angle κ = 90°, and are intended primarily for indexable inserts (hardmetal, ceramic or other cutting materials) mounted by clamping. The standard defines dimensional data, designation rules, material options and marking requirements to ensure interchangeability and correct application in internal turning operations.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and purpose: Applies to internal turning tool holders with cylindrical shank, style F (reduced shank, 90° cutting-edge angle).
- Dimensions and tolerances: Detailed dimensions (symbols and preferred property names) are provided in Tables 1–3 and accompanying figures for:
- Rhombic indexable inserts (shape C)
- Triangular indexable inserts (shape T)
- General dimensions f, l and corner radius dependencies
- Designation system: Standardized naming format (see ISO 5609-1 for full rules). Example format from the standard:
Tool holder ISO 5609-2 - S10H - SCFCR 06 - 10
- Material requirements: Acceptable materials include:
- Steel (minimum tensile strength ~1 000 N/mm²)
- Hardmetal (carbide) with brazed steel head
- Heavy metal tools
Manufacturers retain discretion over final material and design choices within the standard.
- Design and mounting:
- Options for lubrication holes and antivibration devices
- Standard mounting types shown in Tables 1 and 2; custom mountings possible by agreement
- Clamping device supplied with the tool holder; inserts are not supplied
- Corner radius and insert thickness: Nominal corner radii and insert thickness values are specified; deviations must be stated when ordering.
Applications and users
ISO 5609-2:2012 is used by:
- Cutting tool manufacturers designing and producing internal turning tool holders (style F)
- Machine tool builders and tooling engineers specifying compatible holders for internal boring and finishing operations
- Procurement and quality departments requiring standardized designations, marking and interchangeability
- Tooling and maintenance teams in metalworking industries (automotive, aerospace, general engineering) using indexable inserts for internal turning
Practical benefits include improved interchangeability, reduced setup errors, clearer ordering information and better compatibility between inserts and holders.
