Overview
ISO 5610-4:2014 specifies tool holders with rectangular shank (Style D) for indexable inserts. Style D tool holders are characterized by a straight shank and a cutting edge angle κ = 45° for side cutting. The standard covers holders intended for indexable inserts made of hard metal or other cutting materials, mounted by clamping, and used mainly for turning operations. This is the second edition (2014) and is part of the ISO 5610 series on rectangular-shank tool holders for indexable inserts.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Dimensions and geometry: Detailed tables and figures define dimensional parameters for Style D holders used with square (S) and round (R) inserts. Only the tabulated dimensions need to be observed; pictorial representations are illustrative.
- Cutting edge angle: Fixed design parameter κ = 45° for side cutting (Style D).
- Designation rules: The standard defines a structured designation including reference to ISO 5610-4, type of mounting, insert shape, tool style, normal clearance, hand of tool, height (h), width (b), tool length (symbol per ISO 5608) and cutting-edge length. Example: Tool holder ISO 5610-4 - PSDNN 3225 P12.
- Material: Tool-holder material should be steel with a tensile strength of at least 1 200 N/mm².
- Design features:
- Types of mounting (bore clamp, countersink screw, etc.) are given in the tables; alternative mountings are by agreement with the manufacturer.
- Corner radius (r) and its relation to cutting-edge length (l) are specified; nominal r-values for common l are provided.
- Insert thickness (s) values in the tables apply to inserts without shim; deviations must be specified when ordering.
- Extent of delivery: Holders are delivered complete with the clamping device, but without indexable inserts.
- Marking: Holders shall carry the manufacturer’s letter symbol and name/trademark; packaging should reference ISO 5610-4:2014.
Applications and users
ISO 5610-4 is used by:
- Tool designers and tooling manufacturers specifying or producing rectangular-shank tool holders for turning.
- CNC and lathe shops selecting holders for indexable carbide inserts.
- Procurement and quality departments ensuring interchangeability and conformity to international tooling standards.
- CAD/CAM and tooling-data teams using standard designation and dimensions for tool libraries.
