Overview
ISO 5611-10:2015 defines dimensional, designation and design requirements for cartridges, type A, style U, used with indexable inserts for turning. Style U cartridges have a cutting-edge lead/cutting angle κr = 93° (end cutting) and are intended primarily for internal turning with indexable inserts made of hard metal (carbide), ceramic or other cutting materials. The standard specifies allowable cartridge sizes, retention methods, material requirements and marking/delivery conditions.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and geometry
- Applies to Type A cartridges with fastening hole(s) and style U geometry (κr = 93°) for end cutting.
- Common tool heights covered include h = 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25 mm (see ISO 5611-1 for dimension correlations).
- Dimensions and tolerances
- Critical dimensions (h, f, l, etc.) are specified; cartridges need only meet the numeric dimensions rather than exact graphical representation.
- Corner/insert nose radii (rε) are accommodated; dimensions f and l depend on the insert edge radius (see ISO 5611-1 and Table 2 of the standard).
- Designation system
- Standardized naming format (example): Cartouche ISO 5611-10 – STUCR 12CA – 16 - encoding retention method, insert shape, cartridge form (U), relief, cutting direction, height, type and insert size.
- Material and construction
- Cartridge material: steel with a minimum tensile strength of 1 200 N/mm².
- Retention/holding methods include central-screw fixation, clamps or combined methods (letters S, C, P denote retention mode).
- Adjustment, delivery and marking
- Manufacturers may fit adjustment screws to correct dimension f.
- Cartridges are delivered complete with fastening hardware and adjustment screws.
- Marking must include characteristic letters and manufacturer name/brand; packaging should show the ISO 5611 number.
Applications and who uses it
- Practical for cutting-tool manufacturers, toolholder and cartridge designers, CNC tooling engineers, and procurement/quality teams specifying internal turning tooling.
- Used in engineering and manufacturing contexts for:
- Standardized sourcing of internal turning cartridges.
- Ensuring interchangeability of toolholders and indexable inserts.
- Design validation and shop-floor quality control for turning operations on lathes and CNC machines.
