Overview
ISO 5821:2009 - "Resistance welding - Spot welding electrode caps" specifies the geometric dimensions, tolerances and designation rules for female-taper spot welding electrode caps used on resistance spot welding equipment. The standard covers caps that attach to electrode adaptors using a female taper (primarily taper 1:10, with an Annex for taper 1:9,6) and limits application to caps where the recommended electrode force for specified diameters is not exceeded.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Dimensions and types: Detailed dimension sets and preferred sizes for multiple cap types (A0–G0) for taper 1:10, and alternative dimensions for taper 1:9,6 (Annex A).
- Tolerances: Tight manufacturing tolerances are specified - for example diameter tolerances in the order of ±0.15 mm (typical) and length tolerances of ±0.5 mm; taper angle tolerance around ±1°; circularity to ±0.02 mm. (See Table 3 in ISO 5821:2009.)
- Maximum electrode force: Recommended maximum electrode forces are given by cap diameter and material hardness. Example values (taper 1:10):
- d = 13 mm → F ≈ 2.5 kN (≤150 HB) / 3.5 kN (>150 HB)
- d = 16 mm → F ≈ 4.0 kN / 5.5 kN
- d = 20 mm → F ≈ 6.3 kN / 7.5 kN
(Corresponding values for taper 1:9,6 are given in Annex A for diameters 12.7, 15.8 and 19.1 mm.)
- Materials and marking: Materials must comply with ISO 5182 (electrode materials); packaging must be marked with the full ISO 5821 designation and material (example format provided).
- Designation rules: Standardized naming convention to unambiguously identify cap type, diameter, length, radius, and taper angle.
