Overview
ISO 5942:2024 - Bamboo-wood composite for container flooring - is the first edition International Standard that defines classification, technical requirements, inspection methods and rules, and requirements for marking, packaging, transportation and storage of bamboo‑wood composite used as flooring in freight containers. It applies to the Series 1 freight containers specified in ISO 1496‑1:2013 and its Amendments (Amd 1:2016, Amd 2:2024). The document was prepared by ISO/TC 296 (Bamboo and rattan).
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard provides clear requirements and measurable limits for container flooring components made by bonding bamboo and wood elements (e.g., bamboo mat, bamboo strand, wood veneer):
-
Classification
- Unfinished vs. finished bamboo‑wood composite (based on surface treatment/coating).
-
Size and tolerances
- Typical panel lengths: 1 010, 1 388, 1 626, 1 967, 2 224, 2 400 mm (alternatives by agreement).
- Widths: 636 mm, 1 160 mm.
- Thickness: 28 ± 0.8 mm.
-
Dimensional and geometric limits
- Diagonal difference: ≤ 2 mm.
- Edge straightness: ≤ 0.5 mm/m.
- Degree of warping: ≤ 0.3% in length and width directions.
- Note: panels are chamfered during manufacture.
-
Appearance quality
- Separate criteria for unfinished and finished panels, and for surface vs bottom layers (crack width/number limits shown in the standard).
-
Physical and mechanical properties
- Requirements and inspection for density, moisture content, bond durability, short‑span bending, concentrated load, and overall floor strength.
- Specimen preparation and standard conditioning are specified for reproducible testing.
-
Inspection methods and rules
- Methods for measuring size, diagonal, edge straightness, warping and appearance.
- Inspection categories: delivery, type, floor strength inspection.
- Sampling schemes reference ISO 2859‑1.
-
Marking, packaging, transport and storage
- Product marking and packaging label requirements plus handling/storage guidance.
Practical applications and users
ISO 5942:2024 is intended for stakeholders involved in design, manufacture, procurement, testing and certification of container flooring:
- Container manufacturers specifying compliant bamboo‑wood flooring.
- Material suppliers producing bamboo‑wood composite panels.
- Shipping lines, freight forwarders and logistics operators requiring durable, inspected container floors.
- Inspection bodies and test laboratories performing the referenced physical/mechanical tests and conformity assessments.
- Specifiers and procurement teams who need standardized acceptance criteria and packaging/marking rules.
