Overview
ISO 6182-12:2019 specifies performance requirements, grooving dimensions, test methods and marking requirements for grooved-end components and couplings used in steel pipe systems for automatic sprinkler systems. It applies to grooved steel tubes, pipes, grooved-end fittings and other grooved-end components up to 300 DN nominal diameter. The standard is part of the ISO 6182 series on fire protection for automatic sprinkler systems.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and compatibility
- Dimensional compatibility of grooved ends and couplings; typical groove dimensions are provided in Annexes A–C (roll, cut, cast grooves).
- Materials and construction
- Housing materials: ductile iron (ISO 1083 Grade 400‑15), malleable iron or equivalent strength/corrosion resistance.
- Gasket materials: EPDM, nitrile, silicone or other suitable elastomers for intended service.
- Fasteners: bolts meeting minimum mechanical properties (e.g., Class 8.8, minimum tensile strength ~800 N/mm²) and zinc plating or equivalent corrosion protection; nuts meeting ISO 898‑2 or equivalent.
- Performance and pressure
- Rated working pressure requirements, minimum pipe wall thickness conditions and nominal sizes up to DN 300.
- Test methods
- Defined tests include vacuum, air leakage, low-temperature exposure, heat aging, hydrostatic pressure, bending moment (two test methods), gasket material evaluation (compression set, tensile/elongation) and fire resistance.
- Test conditions, assembly procedures and acceptance criteria are described to ensure repeatable verification.
- Marking and documentation
- Housing and gasket marking requirements plus mandatory manufacturer’s installation instructions and quality‑control responsibilities.
Applications and who uses this standard
ISO 6182-12 is used by:
- Manufacturers of grooved couplings, fittings and grooved-end pipe components to design, produce and mark compliant products.
- Test laboratories and third‑party certifiers to perform standardized performance and durability tests.
- Fire protection engineers, specifiers and contractors selecting and installing grooved mechanical couplings in sprinkler systems.
- Procurement and code authorities verifying product conformity with international fire protection requirements.
Practical uses include product design verification, quality control, interoperability checks between components, installation guidance and specification writing for fire‑suppression piping.
