Overview - ISO 6361-3:2014 (aluminium strip tolerances)
ISO 6361-3:2014 defines the tolerances on shape and dimensions for wrought aluminium and aluminium-alloy strip produced by cold-rolling for general engineering applications. The standard applies to strip with thickness > 0.15 mm up to and including 16 mm and covers common wrought alloys (for example 1050, 3003, 5005, 6061, 7075 as listed in the document). It excludes reroll stock (coiled semi‑finished products) and special products such as corrugated or embossed material. Technical conditions for inspection and delivery are referenced in ISO 6361-1.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Thickness tolerances: Specified in detailed tables (Tables 1 and 2). Tolerances vary by alloy, nominal thickness band and strip width. When a tolerance is specified as “all plus” or “all minus,” the table value is doubled.
- Width tolerances: Given in Table 3. Tolerances depend on specified thickness and width ranges.
- Shape tolerances (lateral curvature): Lateral curvature is measured as the deviation from straightness over a 2 000 mm basis length (strip resting on a flat surface and checked against a straight edge). Maximum permissible curvature values are given in Table 4.
- Scope limits: Applies only to cold-rolled strip for general engineering; not for reroll stock or special textured products.
- Agreement for out-of-range products: For thicknesses/widths outside the published tables, tolerances must be agreed between purchaser and supplier.
Applications and practical value
- Ensures consistent dimensional quality of cold-rolled aluminium strip for manufacturing and fabrication.
- Provides clear acceptance criteria for quality control, inspection, and contract specifications.
- Helps design and procurement teams set realistic tolerances for parts manufactured from aluminium strip, reducing rejection rates and disputes.
- Relevant to production and process control in industries that use aluminium strip for components, cladding, enclosures, and intermediate products.
Who should use ISO 6361-3:2014
- Aluminium strip manufacturers and mill quality departments
- Purchasers and procurement teams specifying material acceptance criteria
- Quality inspectors and testing laboratories performing dimensional checks
- Design and process engineers who need to match material tolerances to fabrication and assembly requirements
- Metal fabricators and converters working with cold-rolled aluminium strip
