Overview
ISO 6451:1982 specifies a rapid method for checking fusion of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coatings on plastics coated fabrics. Intended as a quick screening test for PVC-coated textiles, the method identifies whether a PVC coating has adequately fused to the substrate. It is not suitable for coatings made from aqueous PVC dispersions.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Rapid fusion-check test for PVC coatings on coated fabrics (excludes aqueous dispersion PVC coatings).
- Reagents and apparatus:
- Acetone, analytical grade.
- Glass vessel large enough to hold test assemblies (can be covered).
- Glass rod, diameter 5 mm.
- Metal clips to secure test pieces.
- Test pieces:
- Normally three test pieces per coated face.
- Typical dimensions depending on thickness: 20 mm × 40 mm or 20 mm × 70 mm.
- Take samples from center and from positions at least 200 mm from the edges; use six pieces when coated on both sides (three per face).
- Procedure (summary):
- Visually inspect PVC layer for existing cracks/holes and record.
- Fold each test piece over the 5 mm glass rod with the coating outward and secure with a metal clip.
- Immerse assemblies in acetone at standard laboratory temperature for 15 minutes.
- Remove and visually examine the bent area for new cracks or holes. Disregard lacquer removal or superficial surface effects.
- Interpretation and reporting:
- If fresh cracks or holes appear in the bent area, fusion is incomplete (fail).
- Test report must include reference to ISO 6451:1982, product identification, test temperature, result (fusion complete/incomplete), any deviations, date, and test-piece length.
Applications and users
ISO 6451:1982 is a practical, low-cost screening method used for:
- Quality control in manufacturing of PVC-coated fabrics (awnings, tarpaulins, upholstery, technical textiles).
- Incoming inspection by procurement teams to confirm coating integrity.
- R&D and material evaluation to quickly compare fusion quality across formulations or processes.
- Conformity checks in independent testing laboratories and by compliance officers.
Typical users: quality assurance technicians, lab analysts, materials engineers, textile/coating manufacturers, and buyers specifying coated-fabric performance.
Related standards
- ISO 6451:1982 was prepared by ISO/TC 45 (Rubber and rubber products). Other ISO standards on coated fabrics, PVC testing, and physical/chemical test methods may be relevant; consult the ISO catalogue or national standards bodies for related or successor standards.
