Overview
ISO 6753-2:1998 - "Tools for pressing and moulding - Machined plates - Part 2: Machined plates for moulds" is an ISO standard that defines the dimensional system, tolerances and designation rules for machined plates used in moulds. It standardizes plate types, nominal sizes, surface quality classes and designation format to support consistent manufacture and interchangeability of mould plates in tooling applications.
Key Topics
- Plate types: Defines five plate types for moulds:
- Type A: clamping plates
- Type B: cavity plates
- Type C: intermediate plates
- Type D: ejector plates
- Type E: risers
- Dimensions and sizes: Provides standard lengths, widths and thickness combinations (in millimetres) for each plate type (see tables and figures in the standard).
- Tolerances and geometric limits: Specifies limit deviations, parallelism and perpendicularity requirements and how these scale with plate length. (Limit deviations are given for a 100 mm reference length and are multiplied by a length factor for longer plates - e.g. the standard shows how to compute parallelism for l = 556 mm.)
- Surface roughness classes: Two surface classes are defined:
- Class I (finished plates) - Ra ≈ 0.8 μm
- Class II (prefinished plates) - Ra ≈ 3.2 μm
- Material and hardness: Material choice and hardness are left to the manufacturer’s discretion, allowing flexibility based on application and tooling practice.
- Designation rules: Specifies a clear naming convention for machined plates. Example:
- Machined plate ISO 6753-2 - A - 96 · 120 · 12,5 - I
- Machined plate ISO 6753-2 - D - 96 · 20 · 25 - II
Applications
- Standardizes machined mould plates used in:
- Injection moulding and compression moulding tools
- Press tools and tooling assemblies where mould plates interface
- Primary users:
- Tool and die makers, mould designers and manufacturers
- Plate suppliers and precision machining shops
- Quality engineers and inspectors ensuring dimensional conformity
- Benefits include improved interchangeability, streamlined procurement, predictable fit-up and clearer communication between designers, manufacturers and buyers.
