Overview
ISO 683-4:2016 specifies the technical delivery requirements for free-cutting steels supplied as semi‑finished products (blooms, billets, slabs), bars and wire rod. The standard covers three groups of free-cutting steels for mechanical purposes:
- not intended for heat treatment,
- suitable for case-hardening,
- suitable for quenching and tempering.
Products are normally delivered in the untreated (“as hot‑worked”) condition unless another heat‑treatment is agreed. Free‑cutting steels are commonly used as bright bars (see ISO 683‑18 for bright products). ISO 683-4:2016 works together with ISO 404 (general technical delivery requirements).
Key topics and technical requirements
ISO 683-4:2016 defines the essential elements manufacturers and purchasers must address:
- Classification and designation of steel grades (aligned with ISO 4948 and ISO/TS 4949).
- Information to be supplied by the purchaser, including product form, dimensions/tolerances, steel grade, and inspection document type.
- Manufacturing and heat‑treatment conditions, including default delivery state and optional agreed treatments.
- Material requirements covering chemical composition, hardness, mechanical properties, machinability and weldability.
- Quality attributes such as grain size, internal soundness, surface quality, shape, dimensions and tolerances.
- Inspection and test methods, test frequency, sampling, hardness and tensile testing (references to ISO test methods), marking and documentation.
- Options and supplementary requirements: special conditions and deviations can be agreed at order (see Clause 5.2 and Annex B).
Practical applications
ISO 683-4 is used to ensure consistent supply and performance of free-cutting steels for components where high machinability is required:
- high-volume machined parts (fasteners, fittings, small turned components)
- parts requiring rapid metal removal and stable tool life
- bars and wire rod intended for further forming, machining, or heat treatment (case-hardening or quench & temper)
Using the standard helps reduce procurement risk, ensures compatibility between mills and downstream processors, and streamlines inspection and acceptance.
Who uses this standard
- Steel manufacturers and rolling mills (product specification and testing)
- Procurement and sourcing teams (ordering and inspection requirements)
- Quality engineers and metallurgists (acceptance criteria and test methods)
- Machinists and component manufacturers (material selection for machinability)
- Heat‑treatment shops and design engineers (selecting steels suitable for case-hardening or quench & temper)
