Overview
ISO 7209:2023 - Titanium and titanium alloys - Plate, sheet and strip - Technical delivery conditions defines the requirements for manufacture and delivery of flat-rolled titanium products. It standardizes the technical delivery conditions for plate, sheet and strip made from titanium and titanium alloys to support consistent quality, commerce and conformity across international markets.
The standard:
- Specifies scope and purchaser information requirements
- Defines product types (plate, sheet, strip) and their dimensional ranges
- Covers manufacturing routes, chemical composition, mechanical properties, tolerances, surface condition and inspection/ certification requirements
Keywords: ISO 7209:2023, titanium plate sheet strip, technical delivery conditions, titanium alloys, mill product certificate.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Product definitions:
- Plate - flat-rolled product with uniform thickness over 5 mm.
- Sheet - uniform thickness over 0.20 mm up to and including 5 mm.
- Strip - flat-rolled product over 0.20 mm, normally supplied in coils.
- Information to be supplied by the purchaser: quantity, designation, dimensions, packaging, inspection, mill product certificate and any certification requirements. A set of optional requirements (restrictive chemistry, product analysis, special mechanical properties, special tolerances, manufacturing method/finish) can be specified at order stage.
- Manufacturing: products are made by hot-working or hot-rolling of ingot/intermediate product, with appropriate cold-rolling, surface conditioning and heat treatment; supplied as solid wrought product in straight lengths or coils.
- Chemical composition: limits and reporting requirements for alloying and residual elements; guidance on which “other elements” to report (e.g., >0.1 % each or >0.4 % total). Chemical analysis methods and referee methods include ASTM E2371, ASTM E539, ASTM E1409 and relevant ISO methods.
- Mechanical properties and tests: tensile properties, bend tests and sampling/test-piece procedures are specified (references include ISO 6892-1 and ISO 7438).
- Dimensional tolerances and surface condition: thickness, width, length, flatness, straightness tolerances plus surface imperfections, non-destructive testing and acceptance/rejection criteria.
- Inspection, marking and documentation: types of inspection documents, mill product certificate requirements, marking and packaging rules and certification options.
Practical Applications and Users
ISO 7209:2023 is used by:
- Titanium mill and sheet manufacturers for production and quality control
- Procurement and specification engineers to define purchase orders and contract terms
- Quality assurance, inspection and testing laboratories to verify compliance (chemical, mechanical, NDT)
- Aerospace, medical, chemical processing, marine and other industries specifying titanium plate, sheet or strip where consistent material delivery conditions are critical
Benefits: harmonized material specifications, clearer purchaser–manufacturer communication, reliable mill certificates and streamlined conformity assessment.
