Overview
ISO 7225:2005, "Gas cylinders - Precautionary labels", specifies the design, content and application of precautionary labels for individual gas cylinders containing single gases or gas mixtures. The standard aims to improve cylinder identification and communicate principal hazards, while aligning label design with the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods - Model Regulations. Note: labels for cylinder bundles and bundle labels are excluded.

- Label components: Precautionary labels comprise a diamond-shaped hazard label (primary and, if needed, one or two subsidiary hazard labels) and an adjacent panel carrying identifying and supplemental information.
- Hazard labels: Use the symbol, colours and numerals required by the UN Model Regulations or other applicable transport regulations. Primary and subsidiary labels can overlap but the primary label and its class number must remain fully visible.
- Panel content: Should include transport identification information (proper shipping name, UN number), supplementary hazard/precautionary instructions, filler company name/address and, where applicable, filling mass.
- Size & placement: Minimum label dimensions are specified according to cylinder outside diameter (see Table 1). Hazard labels equal to or greater than 100 mm × 100 mm shall be on the cylindrical part. Preferred location is on the rounded cylinder body or within 50 mm below it; small cylinders may use the cylinder body or neck ring if dimensions permit.
- Materials & durability: Labels and adhesives must be durable for foreseeable transport, storage and use conditions, and adhesives must be compatible with the cylinder surface.
- Filler responsibility & maintenance: The filling organization is responsible for correct attachment, removal or replacement of labels to match cylinder content. Labels must be firmly attached and legible; outdated labels must be removed unless information is identical.
