Overview
ISO 740:1976 specifies a titrimetric method for determining the total soluble alkalinity of sodium carbonate (soda ash) for industrial use. The standard describes sample preparation, dissolution, filtration, and titration procedures to quantify alkalinity expressed as percentage by mass of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3). ISO 740:1976 replaces ISO Recommendation R 740-1968.

With the 25 mL aliquot and 500 mL dilution, % Na2CO3 = (106 × V) / m, where V is mL HCl used and m is grams of test portion. Adjust if reagent normality differs.
