Overview
ISO 8405:2023 - Tools for moulding - Ejector sleeves with cylindrical head - Basic series for general purposes defines standardized ejector sleeves used in compression and injection moulds and in diecasting dies. The standard specifies dimensions and tolerances (in millimetres), material guidelines, hardness and surface-finish requirements, and the prescribed designation format for these components. It is the fifth edition and replaces ISO 8405:2020.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Dimensions and tolerances: Detailed geometric dimensions are given by Figure 1 and Table 1; standardized diameters, lengths and head proportions are listed. Tolerance classes and limits reference ISO 286-2.
- Materials: Two primary material families are specified:
- Hot‑work steel (for hot moulding) and
- Alloy steel for cold work (for cold moulding).
- Hardness and surface treatment: Hardness ranges are specified for both the body and the head. Examples included in the standard:
- Nitrided head: min. 950 HV0.3 (where applicable)
- Body/head Rockwell values are given (e.g., hot‑work steel and alloy steel HRC ranges in Table 2)
- Surface roughness: Guidance is provided (e.g., Ra values noted for hot‑work and alloy steels) to ensure reliable ejection and part quality.
- Designation rules: A compact designation format is required (e.g., “Ejector sleeve with cylindrical head ISO 8405 - D - L - Material”), where D = diameter in mm and L = length in mm.
- Repair diameters and extensions: The document lists recommended repair diameters and provides guidance for diameters beyond the main table (up to 32 mm) using proportions from ISO 6751.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 8405:2023 is intended for:
- Mould and die designers specifying standard ejector sleeves in tool drawings
- Toolmakers and die shops manufacturing or repairing mould components
- Quality and procurement teams ensuring parts meet dimensional and hardness standards
- Maintenance engineers replacing or refurbishing ejector sleeves in injection, compression and diecasting tooling
Using ISO 8405 helps ensure interchangeability, consistent performance during ejection, and reliable durability in production environments.
