Overview
EN ISO 6508-1:2023 - “Metallic materials - Rockwell hardness test - Part 1: Test method (ISO 6508-1:2023)” specifies the standardized procedure for performing Rockwell regular and Rockwell superficial hardness tests on metallic materials. Approved by CEN in December 2023, this fifth-edition test method applies to both stationary and portable hardness testing machines and covers Rockwell scales A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, K, 15N, 30N, 45N, 15T, 30T, and 45T.
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability: Defines test method boundaries and notes that some materials/products may require other standards (e.g., ISO 3738-1, ISO 4498).
- Scales, indenters and forces: Specifies Rockwell regular and superficial scales, types of indenters (diamond cone, specified ball diameters) and the associated preliminary and total test forces and scaling constants (tables provided for each scale).
- Testing machine and test piece requirements: Requirements for stationary and portable machines, indenter types, specimen preparation and minimum thickness constraints (see Annex B).
- Test procedure and reporting: Step-by-step measurement procedure, designation examples (e.g., “70 HR30TW”), and required content of the test report.
- Uncertainty and traceability: Guidance on determining measurement uncertainty (Clause 9, Annex G informative) and traceability of hardness measurements (Annex I).
- Verification, calibration and inspection: References and normative links to verification/calibration of machines and indenters (ISO 6508-2) and calibration of reference blocks (ISO 6508-3). Includes daily verification procedures (Annex E) and inspection of diamond indenters (Annex F).
- Special cases and corrections: Normative annexes cover special thin-product tests (Annex A), thickness limits (Annex B), and corrections for curved surfaces (Annexes C and D).
Applications
- Quality control and acceptance testing in metallurgy, heat treatment, fabrication, automotive, aerospace, and general metalworking.
- Field and laboratory hardness testing using portable and stationary Rockwell testers.
- Material selection, hardness specification compliance, and correlation to mechanical properties where Rockwell hardness is referenced.
Who should use this standard
- Mechanical/quality engineers, metallurgists, laboratory technicians, inspection bodies, and manufacturers requiring standardized Rockwell hardness testing and traceable results.
