Overview
ISO 8430-1:2016 - "Resistance spot welding - Electrode holders - Part 1: Taper fixing 1:10" specifies the dimensions, tolerances and designation rules for resistance spot welding electrode holders (type A) that use a male taper 1:10 to fix directly to the welding cylinder in multiple spot welding equipment. The standard covers geometric dimensions, material guidance, delivery protection and marking so that electrode holders are interchangeable and suitable for industrial resistance spot welding applications.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Dimensions and tolerances: Detailed dimensional requirements are provided (see Figure 1 and Table 1 in the standard) for reference diameters and total lengths; example reference diameters listed include 13 mm, 16 mm and 20 mm. Surface roughness indications follow ISO 1302.
- Designation rules: A standardized designation format is required, including type, reference diameter, total length and material (for example: A-16 × 103-A 2/1).
- Materials: Electrode holder materials shall comply with ISO 5182, with preference for group A, type 2; insulation materials must be suitable for the intended application.
- Delivery and protection: Fixing faces should be protected against damage (e.g., synthetic resin coating) during storage and transport.
- Marking: Holders must be marked with the compact designation (type, diameter × length, material) for traceability and interchangeability.
- Interfaces and assembly: The standard references interfaces such as cooling tubes, secondary connecting cables and adaptor fittings (see ISO 9313, ISO 5828, ISO 5183-1), and includes guidance on assembly elements (nuts, bolts, washers).
Applications and users
- Who uses it: Manufacturers of electrode holders and electrode adaptors, welding equipment designers, production engineers, quality and procurement teams in automotive, appliance and general sheet-metal fabrication industries.
- Practical use cases:
- Ensures interchangeability of electrode holders across multiple spot welding machines.
- Supports specification and procurement of compatible holders and adaptors.
- Provides dimensional and marking requirements for OEMs and maintenance teams to replace or stock spare holders.
- Helps tooling designers integrate holders with welding cylinders, cooling systems and secondary cables.
