Overview
ISO 8988:2006 specifies three validated analytical methods for the determination of hexamethylenetetramine (hexa) content in phenolic resins. The standard (third edition, 2006) defines the Kjeldahl method, a perchloric acid titration method, and a potentiometric hydrochloric acid titration method. It gives procedural steps, required reagents and apparatus, applicability limits, safety notes and reporting requirements for reliable quantification of hexa in thermosetting phenolic resin systems.

Scope & applicability

Principles
- Kjeldahl: oxidative digestion in concentrated H2SO4 with catalyst → ammonium converted and distilled → back-titration of excess HCl with NaOH.
- Perchloric acid: one tertiary amine equivalent titrated with perchloric acid in acetone; requires standardization against dry hexa.
- Hydrochloric acid: potentiometric titration of dissolved resin using HCl (0.10 M in butanol/ethylene glycol or 0.20 M in acetone/water).
