Overview
ISO 9098-2:2023 specifies test methods for assessing the safety, strength and durability of bunk beds and high beds for both domestic and non‑domestic use. The procedures apply to fully assembled beds with an internal length greater than 1 400 mm, a maximum bed base width of 1 200 mm, and with the upper bed base surface 600 mm or more above the floor. This Part 2 document complements the safety requirements given in ISO 9098‑1:2023.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & sample preparation
- Tests are performed on the bed as delivered; knock‑down products are assembled per manufacturer instructions.
- Samples stored at ambient indoor conditions at least 24 h prior to testing; test temperature 15 °C to 27 °C.
- Test sequencing and reporting
- Tests follow the order established by ISO 9098‑1:2023; any deviations must be justified and recorded.
- Application of forces and tolerances
- Static loads: maintained for (10 ± 2) s; durability loads: applied for (2 ± 1) s.
- Equipment tolerances specified (forces ±5 %, masses ±1 %, dimensional and angular tolerances).
- Test apparatus
- Finger probes with hemispherical ends (e.g., Ø7 mm and Ø12 mm) and shape assessment probes for gap/entrapment checks.
- Bed base impactor: 200 mm circular body with defined mass and spring system (total apparatus mass and spring rate specified), and a convex striking surface geometry.
- Loading pads (200 mm curved and 100 mm flat options) for application of contact loads.
- Test mattress: foam sheet (100 mm thick) meeting ISO 2439 hardness/density requirements; minimum mattress dimensions specified.
- Test procedures
- Inspection and measurement of holes, gaps and V/irregular shaped openings.
- Strength and durability tests for bed bases, safety barriers, frames, fastenings, access means (ladders/steps) and platform barriers.
- Stability and fastening tests for upper bed attachment to lower bed.
Applications and who uses this standard
ISO 9098-2:2023 is used by:
- Manufacturers and designers of bunk beds/high beds to validate product safety and durability.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing compliance testing against ISO 9098 series.
- Procurement/specifiers and institutional buyers (schools, hostels, hotels) requiring safe bunk/high bed installations.
- Regulators and safety engineers assessing conformity with international test methods.
