Overview
ISO 9897:1997 defines the Container Equipment Data Exchange (CEDEX) general communication codes used in freight container transactions. The standard specifies alphabetic and alphanumeric code sets for commonly exchanged data elements (damage, component, repair, location, material, responsibility, etc.), enabling concise, machine‑readable messages for electronic and manual communication among carriers, repairers and logistics partners.

- EDIFACT alignment: Annex A defines message types and maps to UN/EDIFACT codes for EDI transmissions; EDIFACT message codes are treated as obligatory for electronic interchange.
- Registration authority: The International Intermodal Repairers (IIR) acts as Registration Authority for CEDEX data elements and code updates.
