Overview
ISO 9902-5:2001 is Part 5 of the ISO 9902 series and defines the noise test code specific to weaving and knitting preparatory machinery. Used together with ISO 9902-1 (Common requirements), this part specifies the mounting, operating and measurement conditions required for the measurement, declaration and verification of noise emissions. The standard supports both engineering (grade 2) and survey (grade 3) methods and refers to established acoustics measurement standards for basic measurements.
Key Topics
- Scope and relationship: Applies to machines used for warping, beaming and sizing and supplements ISO 9902-1. Table 1 in the standard provides machine-family-specific measurement conditions.
- Measurement methods: Sound power and emission sound pressure levels are determined in accordance with referenced acoustics standards: ISO 9614 (sound intensity), ISO 3744/3746/3747 (sound power using sound pressure), and ISO 11201/11202/11204 (emission sound pressure at workstations).
- Work station definitions: Three options (designated d, e and f) define positions for measuring emission sound pressure levels. Notable measurement positions include:
- Positions on a measurement line at 1 m from the machine surface and at 1.6 m height; spacing between positions must not exceed 2 m when applicable.
- Specific three-position arrangements on the feed side or opposite feed side for selected machine families (illustrated in the standard).
- Installation and operating conditions: The standard references ISO 9902-1 for installation, mounting and operating parameters. Machine-specific prescribed and variable parameters to be reported are listed in Table 1 (e.g., drive type, beam diameter, package diameter where applicable).
- Uncertainty and reporting: Measurement uncertainties and required recorded and reported information are addressed by ISO 9902-1 and are applied together with the machine-specific items of this part.
Applications
ISO 9902-5:2001 is used by:
- Machine manufacturers and suppliers to declare noise emission values and support compliance claims.
- Test laboratories and acousticians performing engineering- or survey-level noise assessments for preparatory textile machinery.
- Health & safety and compliance teams establishing workplace noise control measures and verifying machine performance against procurement or regulatory criteria.
This part ensures consistent, comparable noise data for warping, beaming and sizing equipment when combined with the common requirements of ISO 9902-1.
