Description (English):

Is one of International Standards defining services and signalling protocols applicable to Private Integrated Services Networks. The series uses the ISDN concepts as developed by ITU-T and conforms to the framework of standards for Open Systems Interconnection as defined by ISO/IEC. Specifies the Name Identification Supplementary Services.

Abstract

Overview

ISO/IEC 13864:1995 - "Information technology - Telecommunications and information exchange between systems - Private Integrated Services Network - Specification, functional model and information flows - Name identification supplementary services" - defines the Name Identification Supplementary Services for Private Integrated Services Networks (PISNs). It uses ISDN concepts from ITU‑T and aligns with the OSI framework. The standard contains Stage 1 (service definitions from a user perspective) and Stage 2 (functional model and information flows) specifications for name presentation and restriction services.

Key topics and requirements

Supplementary services covered
- SS‑CNIP: Calling Name Identification Presentation - delivers the calling party name to the called user.
- SS‑CONP: Connected Name Identification Presentation - provides the connected (answering) party name to the caller and optionally alerting or busy party names.
- SS‑CNIR: Calling/Connected Name Identification Restriction - allows users to restrict presentation of their name.
Service staging
- Stage 1: user-visible behaviour, procedures (provision, activation, invocation, exceptions).
- Stage 2: functional entities, allocation, and detailed information flows (INFORM messages and relationships to basic call flows).
- Stage 3 (not included): required to specify signalling protocols and equipment behaviour for conformance.
Notable technical details
- Name string: up to 50 characters (structure in Annex A).
- SS‑CNIP is generally permanently activated; no user registration required.
- The PISN may truncate names to fit receiving capability; directory management and name acquisition methods are outside the standard’s scope.
- Exceptions: names are not presented when CNIR is invoked or when name information is unavailable (interworking issues or no registration). In some override cases (e.g., emergency/operator profiles), presentation may include an indication that restriction was invoked.
Interactions and interworking
- Describes interactions with other supplementary services and ANFs such as CLIP, COLP, CLIR, call forwarding, call transfer, CCBS/CCNR, path replacement and interworking for incoming/outgoing calls.
