Overview
ISO/IEC 14443-2:2020/Cor.2:2023 is Technical Corrigendum 2 to Part 2 of the ISO/IEC 14443 family - the international standard for cards and security devices for personal identification - contactless proximity objects. Published September 2023 and prepared by ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 17, this corrigendum updates and clarifies the radio-frequency power and signal interface requirements used for proximity cards (PICC) and proximity coupling devices (PCD).
Key topics and technical changes
This corrigendum focuses on clarifications and corrections to measurement and test definitions in Part 2, notably:
- Phase difference and timing definitions (subclause 8.2.2.3)
- Replaces the prior text with a clarified method to compute phase angles (Ø), ordered occurrences (Ø′, Ø″), ΔØ and derived metrics used to quantify phase behavior across subcarrier periods.
- Defines how to select signed vs. absolute maximum phase variation and how to compute the intrastate phase drift metric from ΔØ values across subcarrier periods.
- Time-domain illustration update (Figure 14)
- Provides an updated plot key to show subcarrier cycles, phase samples (Ø), and derived quantities (Ø′, Ø″, ΔØ, Øsecond, ΔØ-E) used in PICC response analysis.
- Load modulation amplitude limits (Table 24)
- Replaces the previous table with corrected VLMA (load modulation amplitude) min/max limits expressed in peak millivolts for multiple reference PICC classes (1–6) and for different subcarrier frequency conditions (fc/16 and >fc/16). It also references the appropriate test PCD assemblies.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Smart card and NFC designers - ensure RF modulation, subcarrier timing and phase behavior meet international conformance for proximity interfaces.
- Test laboratories and conformance suites - apply corrected definitions and updated VLMA limits when validating PICC/PCD interoperability.
- Payment, access control and identity solution integrators - rely on the clarified RF interface requirements to achieve reliable contactless communication.
- Component and silicon vendors - use the corrected measurement methods for antenna and modem characterization.
