Overview
ISO/IEC 21794-4:2022 - "Information technology - Plenoptic image coding system (JPEG Pleno) - Part 4: Reference software" provides the official reference implementations for the JPEG Pleno framework. The standard supplies source code and build/run instructions that demonstrate the behaviors of ISO/IEC 21794-1 (framework) and ISO/IEC 21794-2 (light field coding). Reference packages cover both the baseline block‑based profile and the baseline view‑based profile, and are published as downloadable ZIP archives with accompanying Annexes describing building and usage.
Key topics and requirements
- Reference encoder and decoder software: sample implementations that produce and read codestreams conforming to ISO/IEC 21794-1 and ISO/IEC 21794-2.
- Profiles provided: baseline block‑based and baseline view‑based profiles (separate reference packages).
- Conformance guidance: implementations act as guidelines and test-beds for conformance testing but do not replace normative requirements in Parts 1 and 2.
- Build environment: CMake‑driven build system; tested on Linux (kernel ≥ 4.15) with GCC 9.2.1+, CMake 3.10+, optional Doxygen and TeX Live for documentation. Internet access is required to resolve dependencies during build.
- Documentation and examples: Annexes include step‑by‑step unpack, build, and usage instructions, plus GUI and CLI usage examples for decoding/encoding light field data.
- Legal and warranty notes: ISO/IEC publish a warranty disclaimer and patent notification guidance-implementers should review licence, patent, and royalty considerations.
Applications and practical value
- Codec implementers and developers use the reference software as a starting point to build production encoders/decoders for plenoptic modalities (light fields, point clouds, holograms).
- Test laboratories and QA teams use the reference implementations to generate or validate codestreams for conformance testing and interoperability checks.
- Researchers and academic users experiment with light field coding methods and evaluate rate‑distortion tradeoffs using a standards-backed baseline implementation.
- Imaging and hardware vendors can validate workflows and prototype integration into capture, editing, visualization, and streaming pipelines.
- Practical keywords: JPEG Pleno reference software, plenoptic image coding, light field coding, reference encoder, reference decoder, conformance testing.
