Overview
ISO/IEC 30100-3:2016 - Information technology - Home network resource management - Part 3: Management application - defines a control and management interface for integrated home network resources. It specifies the Home Resource Management Interface (HRMI) and the management application model that sits atop the HES interoperability framework (see ISO/IEC 18012-1). The standard describes communications data formats and message functions exchanged between a home resource management process and one or more management applications to enable consistent device control, configuration and fault management across diverse home middleware technologies.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Home Resource Management Interface (HRMI): logical connection point between management applications and the home resource management process.
- Management application model: architecture, process flows and object interactions for management tasks (see clause 5 contents).
- Communications data formats and message functions: standardized messages for management actions and status exchange.
- Resource model and metadata: abstract representation of home resources including properties, relationships and operations.
- Service list (selected, per clause 6.3):
- Request for user authentication and initial setup
- Requests to start, stop and restart operations
- Inquiry of home resource information (by domain, name, type, ID)
- Inquiry of home relation information (by domain, relation ID, source ID)
- Registration and cancellation of event conditions; event inquiry
- Resource control and resource probing
- Requests for log data about relation information
- Management interface services: defined data structures and event naming conventions to ensure consistent interaction.
Practical applications
ISO/IEC 30100-3 is designed to enable:
- Unified fault management, diagnostics and event handling across heterogeneous home networks.
- Consistent remote configuration and control of devices (HES devices) regardless of underlying middleware.
- Integration of home networks with service provider platforms for monitoring and maintenance.
Typical deployment examples include management servers at service providers, apartment complex servers for multi-dwelling units, and resident endpoints such as home residential gateways or set-top boxes (STBs).
Who should use this standard
- Network and systems architects building home network management solutions
- Vendors of HES devices, residential gateways, and STBs implementing interoperable management interfaces
- Service providers and property managers deploying centralized monitoring and fault-management systems
- Software developers of management applications that need standardized message formats for cross-vendor operation
