Overview

ISO/IEC 3788:1990 defines a tape format and recording standard for 9‑track, 12.7 mm (0.5 in) wide magnetic tape intended for information interchange. It specifies the physical layout, recording method (Phase encoding), nominal recording density (126 ftpmm / 3200 ftpi, with reference use at 63 ftpmm / 1600 ftpi), signal amplitude limits, erasure practice and mechanical/operating conditions to ensure reliable data interchange between information‑processing and communication systems.
