Overview
ISO/TR 11462-5:2023 provides a standardized, language‑independent quality data exchange format for SPC software. Part of the ISO 11462 series on statistical process control (SPC), this technical report defines a transparent, editable, and compact file model to exchange parts, characteristics and measured values between measurement devices, SPC applications and enterprise systems. The format is designed to reduce custom integrations and speed up online data recording and analysis.
Key topics and requirements
- Three‑level data model: distinguishes parts data (K1xxx), characteristics data (K2xxx) and measured values (K0xxx). Quality‑control chart info uses K8xxx; structure metadata uses K5xxx.
- Key fields (Kxxxx): each field is identified by an uppercase “K” plus a four‑digit number. Examples include K1001 (part number), K1002 (part description), K2001 (characteristic number), K2002 (characteristic name).
- File types and layout:
- *.DFD - descriptive/header file
- *.DFX - value file
- *.DFQ - combined/shared file
- Notation rules: one key/value field per line; key and content separated by a space; lines terminated with . Multiple elements use suffixes (e.g., K2002/1, K2002/2); global characteristic settings use “/0”.
- Mandatory fields: K0100 (total number of characteristics) plus at least one part field (K1xxx) and one characteristic field (K2xxx) - ISO/TR 11462‑5 recommends using K1001, K1002, K2001 and K2002.
- Design goals: editable, flexible, space‑saving and language independent (explicit keys map to language‑independent fields that can be translated).
Practical applications
- Enables online data recording and fast, reliable transfer of measurement and quality data to SPC software for real‑time monitoring and decision making.
- Reduces customization effort for metrology device manufacturers, SPC software vendors, and end‑user IT teams by providing a common data field catalogue and structure.
- Supports use cases such as process qualification, automated quality control charting, supplier‑to‑OEM data exchange (notably in automotive) and archival of measurement records.
- Facilitates integration with manufacturing execution systems (MES), laboratory systems and statistical analysis tools.
Who should use this standard
