Overview
ISO/TS 19736:2017 describes a standardized bonding test between polymer teeth and denture base materials used in prosthodontics. The technical specification defines how to produce test specimens, apply a controlled shear load and evaluate the mode of failure (adhesive, cohesive or mixed). It is intended to assess the bonding behaviour along the tooth–base interface; it is not designed to characterize intrinsic material properties of polymer teeth or denture base polymers.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope: Test method for bonding of polymer teeth to denture base materials; not a material property test.
- Specimen preparation: Use maxillary anterior polymer teeth (ISO 22112), silicone moulds, wax or autopolymerizing resin and denture flasks/processing as per manufacturer instructions.
- Apparatus & materials: Examples include addition-cured polyvinyl siloxane, modelling wax, dental gypsum (Type 2 or 3, ISO 6873), pressure polymerization vessel, guided cylindrical flat shear pin (4 mm diameter), and universal testing machine with load cell (measuring range ~10–1000 N; accuracy 1% per ISO 7500-1).
- Test procedure: Mount specimen vertical to shear pin; apply load on the palatal surface (approx. 90° to tooth long axis) with half the shear-pin area contacting the incisal edge. Crosshead speed: 1 mm/min until fracture.
- Evaluation: Inspect fracture surfaces at 10× magnification. Classify failure as adhesive (interface), cohesive (within tooth or base) or mixed. Note: cohesive or mixed fractures are considered satisfactory.
- Pass criterion: At least 4 of 6 specimens must show cohesive or mixed fracture to pass.
- Reporting: Test report must identify tooth and base materials (including batch numbers), processing conditions, specimen counts by failure mode, conclusions, deviations, tester and laboratory information, dates and signatures.
Applications and Users
ISO/TS 19736 is useful for:
- Dental materials manufacturers validating tooth–base adhesion during product development and quality control.
- Dental laboratories assessing processing methods or compatibility between specific polymer teeth and denture base materials.
- Regulatory and conformity assessment where documented bonding performance between polymer teeth and denture base polymers is required.
- Researchers comparing bonding techniques, surface treatments or processing variables in prosthodontic studies.
