Overview
EN ISO 11111-5:2005/A1:2009 is an amendment to Part 5 of ISO 11111, the series on textile machinery - safety requirements. Part 5 covers preparatory machinery to weaving and knitting (warping, beaming, sizing, storage and related equipment). Amendment A1 (2009) updates normative references, refines lists of significant hazards and verification/information requirements, and adds/clarifies items in the scope of safety measures for preparatory textile machines. The document is published by CEN in parallel with ISO and supports conformity with EU machinery directives (notably 2006/42/EC).
Key topics and requirements
- Normative reference updates: Replaces earlier editions with newer standards such as:
- ISO 11111-1:2009 (Common requirements)
- ISO 14121-1 (Risk assessment - Part 1: Principles)
- ISO/DIS 13857:2006 (safety distances to prevent hazard zones being reached)
- IEC 60204-1:2005 (electrical equipment of machines)
- List of significant hazards: References to the updated common requirements (ISO 11111-1:2009) for hazard identification and risk assessment.
- Machine-specific adjustments:
- Changes to Tables listing hazards and safeguards for warping, beaming, sizing lines, cylinder dryers and storage equipment.
- Deletion of some entries (e.g., specific door/lid locking entries) and addition of new items such as work platforms, beamer/burner for direct heat treatment, devices for steam heating, automatic machines and complex installations.
- Information and instruction requirements: Clarifies user information obligations - e.g., instruction handbook must warn that beams used shall be precisely balanced.
- Verification of safety measures: Cross-references updated Part 1 for verification procedures and testing.
Practical applications and users
Who uses this standard:
- Machine manufacturers and designers of preparatory textile equipment (warping, beaming, sizing, storage)
- Safety engineers and risk assessors responsible for machine compliance
- Compliance officers and certification bodies assessing conformity to EU machinery directives
- Maintenance staff, machine installers and end-users who need to follow instruction and warning provisions
How it is used:
- To design and evaluate guarding, safety distances and electrical safety in preparatory textile machinery
- To prepare technical files, instructions and warnings required for CE marking under Directive 2006/42/EC
- To perform risk assessments and verification tests in accordance with ISO 11111-1:2009 and ISO 14121-1
