This international/European standard specifies a method for the determination of nitrogen present in water, in the form of free ammonia, ammonium, nitrite, nitrate and organic nitrogen compounds capable of conversion to nitrate under the oxidative conditions described. Dissolved nitrogen gas is not determined by this method.

Abstract

Overview

EN ISO 11905-1:1998 (ISO 11905-1:1997) is a CEN/ISO method for the determination of nitrogen in water using oxidative digestion with potassium peroxodisulfate. The standard covers measurement of nitrogen present as free ammonia, ammonium, nitrite, nitrate and many organic nitrogen compounds convertible to nitrate under the described oxidative conditions. Dissolved nitrogen gas is not determined by this method. Applicable matrices include natural fresh water, sea water, drinking water, surface water and treated sewage effluent; sewage/trade wastes are included when organic content in the test portion is kept within specified limits.
