Overview

EN ISO 1269:2006 - Plastics - Homopolymer and copolymer resins of vinyl chloride - Determination of volatile matter (including water) - defines two validated laboratory methods to measure the volatile matter (including water) content in vinyl chloride resins (PVC homopolymers and copolymers). The standard is published by ISO and adopted by CEN (EN ISO 1269:2006) and is used for quality control, material specification and compliance testing of thermoplastic vinyl chloride resins.

Principle: Evaporate volatile components from a weighed test portion by heating to constant mass and calculate percentage loss.
Method A (oven and balance):

- Weighing dish: shallow, ~80 mm diameter (glass, aluminium or stainless steel) with lid.
- Balance sensitivity: 0.001 g; weighings reported to nearest 0.005 g.
- Procedure: preheat dish 1 h, spread ~5 g sample, heat ~1 h then in 30 min increments until successive weighings differ ≤ 0.005 g.
Method B (automatic thermobalance):
- Oven temperature: 110 °C ± 2 °C.
- Automatic thermobalance (IR or halogen oven integrated with precision balance).
- Dish: ~100 mm diameter aluminium.
- Sample mass: typically 5–15 g depending on resin.
- End-point: mass loss rate
