Overview
SIST EN ISO 13709:2010 (ISO 13709:2009) is the international / European standard for centrifugal pumps used in the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries. It specifies requirements for design, materials, inspection, testing and vendor data for overhung pumps, between‑bearings pumps and vertically‑suspended pumps. The standard also covers pumps operated in reverse as hydraulic power recovery turbines. EN ISO 13709:2009 supersedes the 2003 edition and was adopted by CEN members (published in Slovenia as SIST EN ISO 13709:2010).
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard provides comprehensive guidance and requirements across pump life‑cycle elements. Major technical topics include:
- Scope and classification - designation and applicability for overhung, between‑bearings and vertically suspended pump types (see Clause 1 and Clause 9).
- Basic design requirements - pressure casings, nozzles, rotors, wear rings and running clearances (Clauses 6.3–6.7).
- Shaft seals and sealing systems - mechanical seal requirements and arrangements (Clause 6.8).
- Dynamics and rotor/bearing design - vibration, lateral analysis, residual unbalance and shaft stiffness (Clauses 6.9–6.11; Annexes I, J, K).
- Materials and metallurgy - material class selection, material specifications for pump parts (Clause 6.12; Annexes G, H).
- Accessories and auxiliaries - drivers, couplings, baseplates, instrumentation and piping criteria (Clause 7; Annex F).
- Inspection, testing and shipment - factory tests, inspection procedures, test data reporting and packing (Clause 8; Annexes M, N).
- Vendor documentation and datasheets - proposal, contract and vendor drawing requirements (Clause 10; Annex L, N).
- Normative and informative annexes - cooling/lubrication schematics, hydraulic power recovery turbine guidance, standard baseplates, inspector checklists and test summaries (Annexes A–N).
Practical applications
This standard is used to:
- Specify pump design and procurement criteria for process service in oil, gas and petrochemical plants.
- Define factory acceptance tests (FAT), inspection checklists and required vendor documentation.
- Guide materials selection, sealing and bearing arrangements for reliable operation in demanding hydrocarbon services.
- Support conversion of centrifugal pumps into hydraulic power recovery turbines where applicable.
Who should use this standard
- Pump manufacturers and vendors preparing compliant equipment and vendor data
- EPC firms and plant designers selecting and specifying pumps for process systems
- Procurement and quality engineers issuing purchase orders and inspection plans
- Maintenance, reliability and rotating‑equipment engineers performing acceptance testing, troubleshooting and upgrades
- Inspectors and certification bodies assessing conformity with industry pump standards
