Overview
EN ISO 17264:2009/A1:2019 is an amendment to the international standard ISO 17264:2009, published by CEN in March 2019. It concerns Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and specifically the Automatic Vehicle and Equipment Identification (AVI/AEI) interfaces used in DSRC-based vehicle-to-infrastructure exchanges. The amendment updates interface requirements, clarifies message contents and ASN.1 data structures, and specifies how application context information (AVI-ContextMark / AVIProfile) is encoded and used.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Interface amendments: Changes to service primitive requirements (for example the Initialization primitive changed from “Optional” to “Conditional” during a transaction in the service tables).
- Message content rules: Clarifications that EID (Electronic ID) shall not be transmitted in certain BST messages related to the AVI/AI application, and that no parameters shall be transmitted in BST related to the AVI/AEI application (as specified in the amendment).
- AVI-ContextMark and AVIProfile: New ASN.1 definition for AVI-ContextMark ::= SEQUENCE { aVIProfile, profileVersion } and enumeration of AVIProfile values (including ISO 14816 CS pointers and EN ISO 19061 profile). The amendment specifies when attributes are sent in the transaction phase vs appended in VST, and that the aVIProfile determines the data type concatenated to the VST Parameter.
- ASN.1 module and data structures: The AVIAEIDSRCInterfaceModule ASN.1 definitions are updated and referenced; the annex points to related ASN.1 modules and prescribes container and data-type encoding rules (use of Container CHOICE types, EmbeddedERIType, etc.).
- Reference handling: The amendment clarifies precedence where ASN.1 specification in the annex prevails if inconsistent with other document parts.
Applications
- Enables interoperable vehicle identification, tolling, access control and roadside-vehicle exchanges using DSRC.
- Supports integration of on‑board equipment (OBE) and roadside units where consistent interface encoding and profile negotiation are required.
- Useful for designing protocol stacks, message encoders/decoders, and compliance tests for AVI/AEI deployments.
Who uses this standard
- ITS system architects and integrators
- Roadside equipment and OBE manufacturers
- Tolling operators and transport authorities
- Software developers implementing DSRC/AVI protocols and ASN.1 encoders
- Conformity assessors and standards bodies
