Overview
EN ISO 22568-1:2019 (Corrected version 2020-11) specifies requirements and test methods for metallic toecaps used as components of PPE footwear. Prepared by ISO/TC 94 and CEN/TC 161, this standard lets manufacturers, test laboratories and footwear OEMs demonstrate the mechanical performance and durability of metallic toecaps intended for inclusion in safety and protective footwear (e.g. as referenced in ISO 20345 and ISO 20346). It supersedes EN 12568:2010.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions
- Covers internal metallic toecaps (external toecaps are not included).
- Defines two toecap types (Type A and Type B) to suit different footwear constructions.
- Design and finishing
- Requirements for surface finish and construction to avoid sharp edges and to ensure fit under the upper.
- Dimensions
- Measurement methods for internal length and width of flange; samples are measured for left and right sizes.
- Mechanical performance
- Impact resistance and compression resistance test methods to verify protective capability of toecaps.
- Test procedures and reporting requirements are specified; uncertainty of measurement should be estimated using recognized methods (e.g., ISO 5725-2 or JCGM 100).
- Corrosion resistance
- Procedure for corrosion testing and reporting; multiple sizes/samples are required.
- Testing details
- Test method clauses cover apparatus, procedure and required test reports.
- Annex A includes a modelling clay check method used in impact and compression testing.
- Marking and documentation
- Requirements for marking toecaps and information to be supplied with test reports.
Sample requirements (summary):
- Finishing, dimensions, impact and compression: 1 sample per size (left and right)
- Corrosion resistance: 3 samples of different sizes
Applications and users
This standard is intended for:
- Toecap manufacturers - to design and qualify metallic toecaps for use in PPE footwear.
- Footwear OEMs - to select compliant components for safety shoes and boots.
- Testing laboratories and conformity assessment bodies - to perform standardized tests and produce certification evidence.
- Procurement and safety managers - to set component specifications in supply contracts and ensure compliance with ISO 20345/20346 footwear standards.
