Overview
EN ISO 4210-4:2023 (ISO 4210-4:2023) specifies the braking test methods used to verify bicycle braking systems as part of the ISO 4210 series. Endorsed by CEN in January 2023, this second edition supersedes EN ISO 4210-4:2014 and provides the standardized procedures laboratories, manufacturers and regulators use to evaluate brake lever geometry, braking performance, strength and heat resistance.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Defines braking test methods that support the requirements in ISO 4210-2:2023 (requirements for city, trekking, young adult, mountain and racing bicycles).
- Brake lever grip dimensions and gauge tests: Detailed test methods for lever types A, B and C, including fitting a gauge and measuring distance a between the lever contact area and the lever end.
- Position of applied force: Test force is applied at a distance b, which is either the measured a or 25 mm from the lever free end, whichever is greater (type A/B); for type C levers the distance is 25 mm.
- Brake-block / pad security test: Conducted on a fully assembled bicycle with rider-equivalent mass; combined bicycle + rider mass specified as 100 kg.
- Actuation force: Security tests use an actuation force of 180 N (or the force required to bring lever to the grip, whichever is lower).
- Braking performance: Includes track test method and machine test method, secondary lever checks, linearity tests, and requirements for test temperature and calculation of braking distance (method updated in 2023 edition).
- Heat-resistance and drag tests: Procedures to assess brake behaviour under thermal stress and post-drag performance measurement.
- Annexes: Informative guidance on least-squares line fitting for linearity (Annex A), measuring braking distance with varying lever forces (Annex B), and deriving total braking energy for heat testing (Annex C).
Applications and users
Who uses EN ISO 4210-4:2023:
- Bicycle manufacturers and component suppliers - for design verification and production quality control.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies - for standardized type testing and certification.
- Product safety engineers and R&D teams - to validate brake performance, durability and thermal behaviour.
- Regulators, procurement teams, and warranty/recall investigators - for objective assessment of braking safety.
Practical uses:
- Type approval and CE/market compliance testing.
- Comparative lab testing of brake systems (mechanical, hydraulic, rim, disc).
- Design iteration to meet ISO 4210 braking performance and durability expectations.
